The government of Cambodia offers many types of visas based on the differing needs of various nationalities who are coming to Cambodia. One such visa is for retired persons who want to enjoy lower expenses in Cambodia than in their home countries. So for them, a special visa called an ER retirement visa is being issued. To get that visa, there are some eligibility criteria:

  • The person who wants to enter Cambodia via this visa route should not be employed.
  • The person should be over 55 years old and have retired.
  • There must be supporting documents to support their claim of being retried.
  • They must be financially self-sustaining to support their stay.

Types of Cambodian Visas

As we mentioned, the types of visas are based on the respective countries's relationships, warmth, and economic activity. so they can get variable visa types with more benefits to the respective citizens of the country involved.

That’s the reason why some countries have visa of arrival and e-visa facilities for only a few countries. We have given a list of visas that are being issued by the government of Cambodia as per the website service fee calculation, so this is not an exhaustive list.

As the retirement visa comes under the ordinary E visa type, it might only be available for specific countries. Check the nearest Cambodian embassy or consular service for more clarification on the type of visa.

How to Apply for a Visa to Cambodia from the USA?

To apply for a visa to Cambodia from the USA, there are generally two ways:

Walk-in:

In this passport, the holder needs to visit the embassy physically in Washington, DC, and there are no appointments needed. The working hours of the embassy are 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. from Monday to Friday, and the list of holidays is on the website of the embassy.

The documents needed will differ based on the visa needs of a particular citizen. We will give details of the general documents that are required.

  • The original passport with a validity date must be older than 6 months.
  • visa application form with two recent passport-size photos,
  • a copy of the passport front page or bio page, and
  • a processing fee based on the visa type.
  • The processing time for the visa will normally be 5–7 working days after the screening and verification.

After this, one can get a visa to Cambodia, whether to enjoy business or travel.

Mail-in:

To apply via mail-in, users need to send the documents with waterproof protection in the envelope with either Fedex, UPS, or USPS with the proper tracking number and mail priority service in the case of USPS. A prepaid return envelope for returning your passport documents.

The processing fee for this must be sent via cheque or money order in the envelope itself, and the processing period will be much longer as it will take more time to receive it, process it, and resend it via mail.

Apart from this, certain categories of visas will be issued through e-visa, which is a very simple process and easy to get. Visit the Cambodian government's Evisa website to learn what type of visa is available for a particular citizen of the country.

Why Retirees across the world throng to Cambodia?

After COVID-19, the travel industry took a nosedive that only a few in business imagined, but it affected most of the tourist hotspot countries. Cambodia is one of these in southeast Asia.

It has the magnificent tourist hotspot of Angkor Wat. To attract tourists, the industry enthused retirees who have enough savings and travel on their own without much guidance. Cambodia is still a developing country with a low cost of expenditure in terms of US dollars, and last year, NASDAQ, in its separate report and International Living Report on the global retirement index, listed Cambodia as one of the top destinations for retirees in Asia.

People love this country because it has better and lower-cost health services and is safe in terms of political stability. People can live here comfortably with a little over 1,000 to 2,000 dollars per month. Compared with developed counties, the figures will skyrocket to 2 or 3 fold, which is also a plus.
